Kickstarting the conversations to make entrepreneurship happen

Love it or hate it, entrepreneur is a word that says a lot about those of us who have been brave enough to take the leap in to running an independent business.

En·tre·pre·neur [ahn-truh-pruh-nur]

A person who organises and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.
And if you can find be a business that doesn't involve risk today then I'll be one happy bunny!
But as you may know, many people often have the ideas but may need a little help to decide to take the leap. This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) and it aims to "provide opportunities today that help entrepreneurs pursue their dreams and build the businesses of tomorrow".

What you can expect to see here

I hope for this website to be a constant source of information and inspiration for independent businesses and their customers. Therefore in addition to the constant directory of independents there will be the following regular features.

Monday Muse - A weekly post featuring an interview with an independent business. If you have any burning questions or would like to be featured please get it touch.

So what's this all about then?

Welcome to the Support Independents blog!

Support Independents is all about, unsurprisingly, supporting independent businesses. The aim is to raise the profile of independent businesses whether on your local high street or online. It is often too easy to go into a chain store rather than a local independent retailer and that is what this is about. Reminding and raising awareness of the alternatives.

There are 4,478,595 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK today (source, 2011) accounting for 99.9% of all enterprises. Almost all of these enterprises (99.2%) are classed as small with 0 to 49 employees. This makes independent businesses and small enterprises extremely important, who knew there were so many of us!!

It is also this group that probably receive the least amount of support from banks and other organisations with government business support programmes often seeing cuts. This blog therefore hopes to raise our spirits, raise awareness and build a network.

So, do you support independents?
